Daisy Buchanan

“The best thing a girl can be in this world is a fool”. This quote shows that Daisy is smart. In the 1920’s women did not have many rights and Daisy knew this. She pretended to be a fool like many of the women were back then but she was able to see clearly what was happening throughout the book.

When Gatsby said that she was a “Possession to be collected” he was implying that Daisy was an object that could be passed around between people. “Now it was again a green light on a dock. His count of enchanted objects had diminished by one”, this implies that as Daisy and the light are connected that Gatsby views her as an enchanted object that he hopes to have.

In the 1920’s woman were restricted to what they could do in their daily lives. They could vote but they did not have many other rights. It was a very tough time for them to be alive. Daisy wanted her daughter to be a beautiful fool because if she was a fool then she would not know the harsh realities of the world for woman. The less her daughter knew the better.

Daisy “smashed up” Gatsby’s heart and his life. His whole life was focused on getting Daisy back, all of his decisions that he made was for Daisy. When she chose to stay with Tom it destroyed Gatsby. Also when she didn’t confess that she was the one who ran Myrtle over it costed Gatsby his life as Wilson thought it was him and shot him. Ever more to show she didn’t care she didn’t even go to Gatsby’s funeral, this is very disrespectful as she was the only reason that Gatsby was dead.

Daisy is amoral, she had destroyed Gatsby’s life and she didn’t even know what she had done. She was very deceiving but she was truthfully corrupt. She killed Myrtle, obviously ruining her life as she was dead, then she didn’t confess to this and Gatsby got killed by Wilson who then also killed himself. Daisy then chose to live the rest of her life in peace with Tom.  “…They were careless people, Tom and Daisy—they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together. . . ” “I never loved him.” Daisy never planned to leave Tom for Gatsby, she just enjoyed the attention that she was getting.
